Hakone is a favorite destination for Tokyoites and tourists looking for a break from Tokyo. Its sculpture trail, The Hakone Open Air Museum, in the verdant setting of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, was created in 1969 by the Fuji Group, when the concept of an open-air sculpture park was first introduced.
The aim was to make art accessible to as many people as possible, through a 7-hectare promenade.
More than 100 works by artists from around the world, including Nikki de Saint-Phalle, Robert Erskine, Toshiko Horiuchi, Kyoji Nagatani and Alexandre Calder, are scattered throughout the gardens and galleries.
